A Letter to a Tree

Dear fair maple,
in autumn light
set ablaze,
you die a beauty,
I let fall a somber tear,
the wind, the rain,
and the frost will surely come,
too soon I say,
for your death,
for your autumn glory,
the forest cries.
even the evergreens,
seem to bow.
the oak, the elm they die too
but you fair maple
are reason
for you die most,
A beauty.

Please tell me what you think

    Greetings, Crnkovic.

I have the same feelings about maple trees; they are beautiful for sure. Something about them that is sheltering and nurturing and kind. And, just as your poem says, the "autumn light" DOES set them "ablaze" as they "die" each Fall and wait through the long winter's "wind" and "rain" and "frost". I like poems that are unafraid to show tears of sorrow for one of nature's most lovely creatures. Your poem does that, and I like it very much.

The poem has no pretentions in it, no fake images or metaphors to screw it up. Its heartfelt simplicity is its beauty. Very fine reading for me.
