[ If there are three common states of matter, ]

If there are three common states of matter,
you are most definitely plasma,
the left-over fourth.

You know, it's even hard to really describe it,
other than what it's in and such,
and I don't generally even teach it.

Still, students remain fascinated by it,
perhaps by virtue of its mystery;
or maybe because they can't understand.

(Mr. Holthaus, I don't want an answer to this question, but I'll still ask:
Is plasma fluid? Would it dance down the street
knocking into cars without damaging them,
enveloping street lamps without leaving
any residue? I think I would like to be plasma
if this is true.)

Yes, most definitely plasma. Here's your quiz.

Author notes

I was pondering chemistry, the three (four) states of matter, the nature of man and individualism, and suddenly had a vision of my chemistry teacher--a generally reserved man--telling me this. It was a little bit strange.

Does this work?

    Electric & Cute

It takes a lot of energy to create plasma. It can be awesome, and useful.
Did you pass the quiz? Or are you still dancing down the street, bumping etherially into cars?

Day dreams and free associations can make interesting subjects for poems; and may actually be a good memnonic to remember what you've studied. You did study didn't you?

    language: 3, rhythm: 3, subject: 3, tone: 3, form: 4.

Thank, you, Mr. Gagiikwe! I did pass the test, yes. I didn't actually study, though. Chemistry is one of those "hopeless" subjects for me, where I do as well as I'm going to whether I study or not. So I'd better absorb it in class. It seems to be working alright for the time being I'm passing the class with rather outstanding grades. Ask me if I've learned anything, though, and I'll most likely reply no. I'm a little too busy having strange daydreams and scribbling "poems" about things like plasma :-) I appreciate the read. I'll swing by your page sometime soon, but for now I must leave to memorize Hecate's speech from Macbeth.

I forgot my thought on a possible title. Something like or near to: The Alchemy of 3+1. Just a thought. Lad

Hey, Nenni, this one kicks butt with its whimsy and imagination. Love it; it's the lighter, airier side of the Nienna whose work I've come to know and love. The dialog between prosaic but knowledgeable teacher and dancing, plasmatic student is minimally told, and has all the more curious insouciance for that.

If that (fourth) state of plasma is this poet, then Yes, its fluidity goes "down the street, knocking into cars...enveloping street lamps" and wrapping words into a poem with flair. And the final line is quick, flat and droll, just like any of the chemistry teachers I've ever known.

Sure it works, Nienna. It seems to me that when you go brief, there's rarely anything to change for improvement. What a fine skill, to carve so deftly in small spaces! Really nice.
