Family Crest

[for Celtic-Cherokee]

Background hazy blue,
smoky mountain shade.
Circular shield,
tanned doe hide
stretched on willow frame,
tied with thongs of strongest sinew.
Writ on circumference
in Sequoia’s script–
“Dedeeshkawnk daynahnohtee”
Sprig of hickory leaves
lying diagonal across the face.
Celtic Cross of forest green
painted upper right.
Irish Harp
in gold and silver,
with figure-head of
maiden Cherokee,
painted lower left.
Coup Feathers underneath –
Seven of eagle
for the Cherokee,
one central of hawk for Ireland,
porcupine quills interspersed between.

This your crest of dignity,
your heritage,
as you sing the twining heart
of two peoples
blended in your life.

Author notes

For a contest I verbally designed a family crest based on Cherokee and Irish symbols.
“Dedeeshkawnk daynahnohtee” - cry for those who must endure - Cherokee proverb
