Guardian

Ancient cat –
Sleeps on the stairs next
to the furnace on cold days.

Thin, arthritic –
same age as my sister,
who,
much older than I,
moved away
and left the cat behind.

Named “Cookie’ –
my sister in her childhood,
thought kittens came in batches.

Blind –
cries when she hears
feet upon the stairs.

Purrs –
when a familiar hand
reaches down
to stroke her and
speak a word of praise.

Ancient cat –
Siamese and regal,
guarded
the door to my room.
