No moon,
night time drive,
girlfriend by my side
on country road.
Headlights vaguely picking up, what?
Looks like old woman in brown dress
walking the centreline drunkenly.
Slowing, concerned for safety
- ours and hers -
only to find a mule
is out for an evening’s stroll.
Passenger beside herself
with laughter.
won’t let me live this down –
brown dress in deed;
and a young man’s image
down the drain.
Led him to the nearest farm,
tied him to the gate
for the neighbours
to pick up in morning’s light.
Despite my ego bruised
at misinterpreting what
the headlights caught,
the drive home is full of
chuckles,
visions of drunken old ladies
walking centrelines
on moonless nights.
