I Don't Dream Tonight

In your arms I read a story
And in your eyes I see my heart
Stolen in the night by a thief so quiet and furtive
I almost couldn’t tell it was gone.
I don’t mind that you’ve taken it
You can have it, if you want.
I just want some small portion of your heart back.
Just a little,
To look at and admire, keep beside my bed
Take it out sometimes and think ,
This is a piece of your heart
A piece you gave to me.
Just something I can look at for a while
To tell myself it’s not all a dream.
You’re everything to me, you’re everything.
I don’t want to let go.
I just want to close my eyes and live a dream forever.
Tonight I can feel your arms around me,
Your lips on mine, your hand curved around me
I can feel the way you move, feel the way your heart beats,
Almost imagine you’re here with me.
And when I open my eyes, you are.
You’re here and I can tell myself it’s not a dream,
Your heart beat surrounds me, your eyes fill me.
I don’t dream tonight.
I don’t dream tonight.
I don’t dream tonight…

colin, for me this is wondrously dreamy in a dream that the poet dreams can become real - that final stanza is so evocative of the yearning for the reality of the other: the arms, the lips and hand, the movement, the heartbeat - all actually HERE and WHOLE, not just a piece of the other's heart, but the all of it. Oh how our longing-for-palpable-love reveals our poetic souls to the world in all their vulnerability. I can feel it in your poem, your dream that wants what is beyond dreaming - the real. I enjoyed this, colin; it has life, it is life.

    Always yours,

    Lad
