A Southern Belle's Got It Made

A southern belle's got it made
'Sides the chiggers, fleas, and skeeters
There's sweet tea and lemonade
Chicken wings and fried green 'maters

Grab a horse or better yet
A four-wheel drive, mud-ridin truck
The real big kind that don't get stuck

"Ya'll have a good one" and "Git 'er done"
Betsy got mad and made'er run
A pocket full of change and a tank full'o gas
Let's high tail it oughtta here real cotton-pickin' fast

Drinkin' on Saturdays, Church on Sundays
Pastor done gone and married Ms. Cornways
All the bitties on the front pew lookin' like they prayin'
AWW, too bad they ain't 'cause then I'd see 'em in heaven

Author notes

Dedicated to all the red-necks that I just can't seem to escape from.

Ha! I love this! I'm from the south. I could hear the accent. This is really clever! Great job, keep writing!

For a young person you have a great range of words and ideas for poetry. I like the way you used colloquilisms in your wording.

lol I know the feeling. Texas and all hehe. Great poem you really stepped out of your element here. Its always fun to put on a different pair of shoes. I might try doing a piece like this sometime it reads like it was fun to write.

Hi Grace. I'm a sucker for deep-fried fun, (mmmm, chicken wings and green maters) and this piece goes down like a mint julep. You poke gentle fun at the South in that manner that I would expect from a true lady, being droll and honest at the same time. The last line is a real gut buster.

Fun write, but even funner to read! (Gosh darn that Southern drawl sure is contagious!)

very nice, Brian Balzer put me onto this and i can see why. have you heard Morning Morgan Town by Joni Mitchell?
i love the last few lines, especially "then I'd see 'em in heaven"
i also enjoyed the cynism around the hypocrisy of drinking on saturdays and church on sundays

    very nice
