What happened to the world we knew?
When did we lose our way?
Or have my memories been eschewed?
Was it just yesterday?
Was not our faith in war renewed,
To fight the bad away?
I must admit, I can't ignore,
The lack of enemy in this war.
What happened to the world at home?
Somehow we slipped to dark?
Why leave our homeless here to roam,
cold, sleeping in the park?
Have bums become our countries loam?
Is this our nations mark?
The homeless live without a cent,
until they die on cold cement.
We're supposed to be enlightened?
was that all just a lie?
Must we always be so frightened?
Must our founding fathers cry?
Will our grip always be tightened,
until we nary even try?
For now I truly am ashamed,
America should be renamed.
Alas there's always hope to come,
no destiny is set.
Our efforts could be great in sum,
if money we forget.
Our enemy is truly from,
our self created threat.
And with each generations pass,
we see ourselves grow up to fast.
I don't know why I wrote this piece,
I guess I was just bored.
Humanity can't be at peace,
we must advance through sword.
The earth should not renew our lease,
her tapestry we whored.
The query of impossible I will now lay to rest,
This world is our humble host, and we its ornery guest.
Author notes
I wanted to try the "Ottava Rima" rhyme scheme for this piece, I apologize for its loopy inability to stay on target. I had not yet had my coffee when I wrote this today.

Yep
You made good points about our imprint on this earth and how we treat each other.
my favorite stanza:
What happened to the world at home?
Somehow we slipped to dark?
Why leave our homeless here to roam,
cold, sleeping in the park?
Have bums become our countries loam?
Is this our nations mark?
The homeless live without a cent,
until they die on cold cement.

I liked it
This was a thought provoking piece of work for me. I liked the imagery and the fact that you covered a lot of ground, homelessness, war, youth, money, and the earth.
The last 4 lines were probably my favorites(if i have to pick)
"The earth should not renew our lease,
her tapestry we whored.
The query of impossible I will now lay to rest,
This world is our humble host, and we its ornery guest."
I loved the take on these lines, and "her tapestry we whored" wow!
"And with each generations pass,
we see ourselves grow up too fast."
This is so true, every year it seems to grow worse.
"The homeless live without a cent,
until they die on cold cement."
I loved the flow of this, and again so true.
If this was in fact a morning jot without coffee, I am impressed. nicely done.
