The Diner

I went into a restaurant
needing something for my belly.
As soon as I walked in
there was something smelly.

I wasn't sure I'd want to eat
whatever I could smell.
What kind of dish, it would be
I couldn't even tell.

A waitress who was named Libby
met me at the door.
She led me to a table and
asked if I'd been there before.

I told her that I hadn't
cause I'd just moved into town.
Though I didn't seem to have much choice
it was the only cafe that I'd found.

She asked if I was hungry.
Now, between you and me,
that was a silly question
or I'd not been there you see.

By now some smoke was rolling
from the diner's kitchen.
to get up right then and hit the door
I was surely itchin'.

Then my stomach started growling
in fact it was quite loud.
I was more than just a little hungry
I could probably eat a cow.

My eyes then started burning
the smoke was getting thick.
I held a napkin to my nose
yet it didn't do the trick.

Next they started watering
I couldn't seem to think.
The odor from the kitchen
was more than just a stink.

I'm not much of a gambling man.
I'm not into taking risks.
It had to quite dangerous
to eat in a place like this.

I could not decide just what to eat.
I was feeling rather fickle.
I thought of the talent of the cook
and just ordered a pickle.

Author notes

Written for a young lady that asked for something funny. Best I could do on short notice.

It's a great poem, funny but a good flow at the same time.

Short notice or not, the young lady's wish was granted. This is funny! I enjoyed a bunch. Write another.
