Junkyard St. Bernard .

Born a St. Bernard,
Our Betsty you see
Had a crisis of identity.
Should she do rescue
Or should she kick ass ?
Whatever –
She wouldn’t let anyone pass.

She was once tiny and cuddly of course
She’d still be thought ‘bijou’
If she were a horse
If you want to get past her
You’d better be hard
Or be packing a gun
When she’s guarding our yard.

Yes, to get past this lady
You’ll need more than luck
Or you might just receive
the most terrible suck.
Yeah, you’re gonna get beaten
You’re gonna get licked.
Your gonna have your butt
So caninely kicked.

If you are a prowler,
A snoop or a robber
She’ll lick you to death
And embalm you in slobber.
She’s fully paid up
Has her watchdoggy card
She’s our junk-yard
St. Bernard.

    Unexpected and delightful

Oh, how I love this poem. It has brought up a memory of a dog that looked pretty much like Betsy. This dog would get away from his owners and hide and wait for me as I carried out the garbage from the youth hostel where I worked. He would jump up paws on my shoulders, send me sprawling garbage and all and then insist on slobbering all over my face as I screamed to the laughing onlookers for assistance. This occurred several times a week.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful poem.

      Paws for thought !

Glad it circulated some of the pleasure that 'Betsy' delivers every day. She belongs to my sister-in-law who dotes on everything about her even as she follows Betsy around her pristine house with a mop! My brother accidentally rhymed 'slobber' and 'robber' and the poem pretty much wrote itself.

He-ey ! I can do humour! Not quite as good as Betsy but she's a professional! Hope Hugo, Dexter and Spitz are still hairy and have a sense of humour. They have to live with YOU after all! Glad you liked the poem and Betsy. We both send our best.  >W<

The 'tale' that wags the dog

Hi Aileen! Seems we have lots of dog-lovers on the site! Betsy seems to have attracted som much favourable comment I'm thinking of making her a regular feature! I asked her for a poem but she's feeling  a little 'ruff' just now! Your Great Dane must do a pretty good line in slobber as well so you'll be familiar with Betsy's pariticular charm. Does the chihuahua wear a life-jacket ? Or is the 'mut' a lifeguard ? Glad you enjoyed this one , I had fun with it myself. My Best ,   >W<

      Sacharin ...

Not my usual form or subject but I had fun writing this for my lovely sister-in-law and her beloved pet, Betsty. And yeah , everyone adores Betsy. Doggy poems get great reviews - think I'll do more of them! My brother hit on 'slobber' and 'robber' and I couldn't resist packing some stuff around it.Thanks for the reply.  >W<

    Doggy Style!

Okay, nine points for affectionate tribute to this hirsuit bone of contention. I`m the carer of a lovable salivater myself, slobbering and moulting her way into everyone`s aorta. Have you seen the film "Best in Show" by Christopher Guest? It`s every mutt-owner`s wet dream. I believe doggy style would be a most popular sell in pet`n`poetry mags.
