It can get frustrating to collect points here. At least twice now, I started a critique when the reward stated was 4. Writing a thoughtful detailed critique takes time. By the time I posted it, the reward had shrunk to 1. At that rate, detailed critiques are an endangered species.
At one point each, think how long it would take to build enough to reward a poem, when four a day is pushing the limits. My request, to be able to import points from AP to fill the need. Any hope of that?

From my understanding this is a separate website from Allpoetry. That is why those who have purchased one or more memberships, points, etc., at Allpoetry were not and will not be transferred from there to here.
I agree it would probably help but then again: would it?
If this website is to prosper I feel that everything should be separate in such regards, this IS supposed to be a separate website, is it not? So, shouldn’t it be garnered in such manners/matters?
My opinion, it may be easier for one to do such things if the points earned from one website to another could be used (those that are separate of course) but I feel, in my opinion, it takes away from the “new” website that is supposed to be “better” for those who do make such critiques than those who do not by showing them that when making such comments as you state you have made and I am sure others in the future and presently do make that it can be done and “here” is the place to do it.

Purchased points, NO
I have never purchased points, and do not see the need.
Please don’t get me wrong. It was not my intention to make this a bastardized AP.Points earned are points earned. My critiques here are much like my critiques were there, detailed, full, and in many cases, intended to be helpful (as teachers are wont to do.) Please feel free to examine the ten I have posted here so far, to make two poems possible to venture forth.
In AP they were rewarded with applause.
Here, if the number of points of a “reward” are used up before a carefully produced critique sees the light of day—or midnight as too often happens with mine, for it takes time, those points are long gone and my reward is ONE point. There is some injustice in that.
Six lines of generalities get 4 points. A solid critique gets 1—only if lucky, more.Terry

To inquire, where does it state where “we” have points?
-
-
On your authors page, it says rewards and then a number right beside it.
-
-
Okay, I have 14. Where exactly does one use them?
-
-
Once you post a poem, on that page it says “add a reward”. You use those points to add more of a reward for those who comment on your piece.

I think that that’s a terrible idea. It’d discourage people from posting on SP.
-

Terrible idea? Then get rid of them all.
Maybe that would be a good thing. Why not abolish rewards altogether?
The kiddies would all go away. Back to collecting racks of trophies in AP. Peer-judging does that. I think my real eye-opener has been to see how much illiteracy is rewarded there with golds.Without reward points at all, there would be no mad rush to collect points to keep a poem eligible here then. Doesn’t anyone understand that one point is pisspoorpay for two hours’ solid work?
When someone reads my poem, I do not want to have only one point to reward a fine contribution with excellent help, things that I have used to make my work better! That has happened. That is where my points would have gone, so that I’d have time to work on something new for SP.
I have not begrudged the critiques I do and know their value, for feedback tells me so. I am a teacher; this is what I know how to do. Check mine out, ten so far. I’ve had Lit courses in university . . . I do need the help of knowlegeable people to refine my work.
It has however almost entirely cut out any new work of mine appearing anywhere in AP. I will drop a poem into a contest now and again but after ignorant comments there, from people who were born knowing everything they will ever need to know, and who are insulted if the ego is not stroked, my level of interest is pretty well gone. (That happened this summer.)
I definitely want this to be a place for serious writers, mature enough to understand the value both to giver and receiver in the study of poetry.
I’m sorry. More than you know. Sorry I asked. I hope not, sorry that I came here at all.

And being paid for ones work is usually piss-poor as well. I’ve been writing for well over 10 years, there are those who have made a “life” of writing poetry and publishing and they can all tell you they got paid shit for it. Poetry isn’t about compensation, at least it isn’t for me, and if it is for others then they and you (if you’re a part of that group) are in the wrong writing field. There’s no “end” payment for poets. We’re pissed on more than urinals.
Actually there was a time if a poet actually collected any type of monetary value for their work that that was a type of disrespect to the writing field in general, of course it’s been centuries since that time.
Do the points here really matter, in the end? I don’t think so, I don’t even see how to use them anywhere let alone if it matters that I have them.

I’m not saying that you should work for two hours for one point. That is ridiculous and I do think that the points system needs to be changed. But I think that importing points from AP will just have everyone going over there, getting points there, then coming back here to spend them. But everyone will be on AP posting comments, so the amount of comments on this website will be reduced dramatically.
Do you honestly beleive that this won’t happen?

I looked at the angle, for some reason I got the “message” in my IM’s.
Bugs everywhere.

You never know when you had enough, until you have more than enough.
Points allow you to promote your work. I think at AP you need points to get the community going. People have contests (which is where many point come from) and then they get to hold contests. AP is all about, to me, getting started- getting things “on paper and putting it out- making it real. We all know that most of the comments are encouraging, and we can enter contests, take classes…what not- a nice place for us all to hang out. Where AP is about worshiping, SP is more about work shopping- revising, rewriting- flushing out. The points encourage you to find other poems. It is necessary for people to work for the points- this site is about work.I think that there should be a way to take rewards that you assign to one poem, back in to your account if you do not want to reward as many critiques. I made a mistake and assigned rewards to the wrong poem. Then I had to go and build up points again. I didn’t mind, I was going to do it anyway, but they were wasted.
I am sure that this page will develop. Stop bitching and be thankful someone took the time to create this space for us. It is so thought out, well designed and welcoming. GOOD JOB GUYS!!!

about lost points
I was told that all remaining points are given back when you archive a poem rather than delete. It is true. I archived three and was left wondering where to use them all. Next time.

Personally, I would be willing to work completely without the point system. I am here to become a better writer. I will offer help where I can and when I feel there is little I can offer I check the ‘comment only’ box so that I don’t recieve points.
If no points meant that fewer people were to frequent this sight, I personally would be all right with that. Of course I would imagine that kevin and the folks might have something to say about that.
Allready There is so many people posting here that the likely hood of having your piece read and commented on is becomeing less and less. I can only hope that those who recieve my comments and critiques will respond in kind.
I have all ready told myself that I am going to leave a comment on every poem I read and have managed to do that so far, regardless of what I feel the quality is.
This sight is suppossed to be about improving both our poems and overall ablility, not collecting points. leave that to the AP sight.
Used properly there they serve their purpose.
Again, I will comment on every poem I read regardless of the possible reward points and I try to balance my reading between the recent postings and the not so recent.
If we all make that commitment things should be fine.

Points for comments
There were a few bugs surrounding some poems saying they had rewards but not when the first comment in this was posted – it has since been fixed.Today I added the ability to remove rewards on poems. I’ll make it auto-remove rewards when you delete a poem (same way archiving does now).
Points and rewarding is to help assure that people who read and critique, will get read and critiqued in turn.
We were automatically adding a free reward on poems for awhile – a decent number of people added poems, then haven’t returned, so there is some ‘chaff’ in the system, that should clear up soon.

Thank you Kevin, it is great to know that hard-earned points won’t be lost unnecessarily. I have found that I spend a far greater amount of time on critiques for others than I do on writing new material of my own. Days go by with nothing new. My choice I guess.

“Points and rewarding is to help assure that people who read and critique, will get read and critiqued in turn.”
I have been lucky to have very helpful critiques, not from many but Daniel and Nocturne in particular really have influenced changes. Those poems have been archived.
(Once they are archived, they are no longer available, right?)Terry
