At Allpoetry, which is one of the reasons why I ceased reading freely in any category there, at Allpoetry mainly everyone places the poem(s) they write in the wrong category.
I am now reading in the “Free Verse” section and have come across three poems and only one of them fit “Free Verse” and the last poem I came across was the one person who holds the one poem that belongs there.
Form and rhyme are not 99% of the time a part of “Free Verse”. Yes, rhyme and form can be but most times when it speaks on “Free” they are just not a part of it.
This is something that bothers me. Putting ones poem in a category that it doesn’t belong. The worst of all the categories that they mainly misplace is “Beat”—I ceased going to the “Beat” category at Allpoetry a long time ago. And I am sure it’s already been done here, I will not even step in that category here or at any other website on the internet. ‘Cause surely I will never read any true “beat” poems in there.
I feel, that as a part of our critiques, we should tell those here what categories they belong in, and I will do that, or suggest another, whatever—but if “we” don’t tell them (those of us who know or need put in our place when we think we know) then they’ll never learn and it’s just not about the written work of poetry but the titles, the categories, everything.
Am I right?

People seem to be confused about the meaning of “Contemporary”, too.

Why I never use it. I used to back in 2001/2002 but then someone said, “you sure do have a lot of contemporary poems ..” and that’s when I ceased using that category.

I guess, technically speaking, that it would be anything written recently. But there are obviously more connotations than that. As a category, it seems to be synonomous with ‘modern,’ but that’s as (if not more) undefineable than the original.
I could make I case for a definition or two, but it seems pretty pointless for the likes of this place. It should probably just be removed entirely, so as to not confuse people.
