I gather jello means “none of the above” or “no personal experience/opinion.”

....
Why do you ask…just curious? -

It was a discussion I had with a co-worker, he stated that he only tried smoking once but didn’t take, I have been smoking for 20 years and I have done cocaine and perhaps even heroin and also many other drugs (including what’s listed above) and those drugs were easier for me to quit more so than cigarettes for I still smoke.
Actually there was a study done with heroin addicts and smokers and it seemed that it was easier for people who did heroin to quit than those who smoked cigarettes. The study was conducted years ago so I have no source but I could probably locate it if it’s still on the internet.
I have, personally, done many drugs and with only one relapse back in 2000 were able to quit them yet I still smoke. I was even an alcoholic for a few years and I have been sober for 5 years.
So, I just wonder from others’ perspective(s) and/or experience(s).

well I believe that coke/heroin are harder to quit… I’ve never had any experience with them. But neither caffeine nor tobacco are hard to quit. And I’ve never been addicted to alcohol.

FS, I like my coffee to kick-start the morning, but have never used any of the others. Other people’s cigarette smoke made me a sickly kid, and left me seriously allergic to it however. Fortunately we have a provincial law now that forbids indoor smoking in any public place, including work.

My mom has smoked since she was 15. She started it as a rebellion against her parents. I know she did drugs and alcohol for a while. Those were never hard for her to quit because she knew she needed to stop that. She had her body freak out over no sleep because she was always going to a party. She took speed so she could stay away for work the next day. She would stay up for days. As for smoking, that is still a big issue for her. When she became pregnant, she stopped smoking but once I was born she smoked again. How is it that she could stop smoking for 8 months but pick it right back up again? She did that twice both times she would go back to her habbit. We have tried many times to get her to quit because it isn't helping her. It is her choice to keep on smoking. She feels she needs the cigarettes. She knows she has an addictive personality so she stays away from the "bad stuff" but yet she continues to smoke. I guess it is all in your will power.

Caffeine
I think caffeine would be harder to get somebody to quit because with the others (besides jello
) People arent aware of a problem. With drugs or alcohol you can point out obvious effects. If you say to somebody "You need to ditch the caffeine your addicted" They would laugh at you and say your stupid.
Which incidentally is what i said
I have unfortuantely had trouble with drugs (pain pills) and alcohol, it was difficult to stop the pain pills (drug free for 2 years now) and the alcohol i was able to control so i can now still go out drinking with friends with out getting out of control. With caffeine though i have had trouble, i drink almost 6 mugs of various flavoured coffee PER DAY plus glasses of Coke. I began suffering from insomnia and tried to go cold turkey which gave me the shakes and migraines (which i had to bare without pain pills)
So i think that caffeine would be harder to quit its just not as important to quit. -

i agree

Good Lord Dave!
Get a grip! No, wait. That seems to be your problem in the first place.

Thats assuming you CAN quit them...

tobacco
i quit a 30 year tw pack a day habit for two and a half years. then when i began drinking i started smoking black and mild cigars. I have been sober for a year and half and struggling with nicotine again. i think the problem (at least for me) is that the drinking was an obvious effect...the smoking is more slower and more insidious -
You'll pull through. I believe all us poets are rooting on your success ^_^

I've done it all ...
the only vice I still can't kick and believe me I want to is the cigarettes -
Tough Call
I've done my share of drinking. I was a weekend alcoholic. I've tried cocaine and luckily didn't get addicted. I smoked way to much for way to long. It took being in the hospital after a gunshot to quit. I was addicted to Dr.Pepper for a long time. I drank it 24-7. I've managed to cut back to 24oz. in the morning and I can do with out it if I choose too. As far as jello goes I've never gotten addicted to it either but I can see how it would be addictive...after all who doesn't like a good jello bath? I would have to say I think Dave Ochs has a point. Of course with me it's sex in general. I'd O.D. if I had the chance. Lord knows I've tried.
Brian

P.S.
Good luck with the cigarettes. Of what you have listed that was the hardest for me to quit. However, I think that would vary per person. Just my opinion. I still say that most people couldn't quit sex if they tried. Then again, who would want to?
