I don’t play, but I live with someone who does. And I work for Guitar Center, so I am surrounded by beautiful guitars (and some ugly ones)all day at work.

I think it’s great that you use the guitar to help with singing. It’s a great tool to use for that.

haha i tried to play guitar and failed utterly. ::jealousy towards electric guitarists:: so many people play guitar today.
its just not my thing. the notes are in a different order than i already know and i just get confused. i always miss the strings with the pick and i cant press the strings all the way down (lol how pathetic).

i am learning drums, used to play clarinet and oboe, and currently play piano and harp. <3

      Goldenhope:
If you still have your guitar, try lowering the action. Hammer off the bridge, file it down and stick it back on so that the strings are closer to the freboard.

I’ve been playing for about two and a half years…. I’ve really struggled by comparison to how quickly I picked up the piano but as far as instruments go, I really love it. It has so much scope.

At the moment, I feel as though i’m stuck in a rut. I can copy other people’s styles but I don’t really feel as though i’m developing my own. Any suggestions?

I know this may not be very helpful, but don't worry about creating your own style. Creating your own style is not something that can be done by trying. It just sort of happens. After all, the guitar can be whatever you want or need it to be. Play like other people if that's within your means, and with time and practice, you'll develop your own style without even having to think about it.

I also think some people are more 'in tune' with certain instruments. For instance, I've tried for years to pick up the piano and have never gone much past playing the C Scale. Yet, with the guitar in 6 months, I've made worlds more progress than on piano in several years (couldn't give you an exact number). Perhaps you're just more of a piano person. That just means guitar may take a little more persistance.

    acoustic

I practice the acoustic guitar. I sing well and hope to one day form a band. This however is unrealistic as school is far too important.

    Well..ATTEMPTING

I’ve been trying to teach myself acoustic guitar for a little over a year now, but honestly, I don’t have much time for it. I wanted guitar to replace clarinet (which I was very good at). It has a broader scope and it won’t screw up my teeth like clarinet did (I guess you could say that I’m holding a grudge). Still, it would more of a comfort hobby for me- I love music, especially all things instrumental.
I number of my friends play guitar as well, and they have been more successful than I have. Does anyone have tips for me? Its been pretty difficult trying to learn by myself, but I don’t want to take lessons.

I got a little plastic guitar from when I was 12. My dad got it for me and said if I learned how to play it at least reasonable well he’d upgrade me to a better guitar.

Yeah, so I learned to play the trumpet and saks on my own years later, though my lungs are so fucked up that I can’t play either one anymore without coughing up blood.

So, I play nothing anymore. I just write.

i play both the ac. and elec. guitar…i love to play mostly folk, like damien rice or ani difranco…i also favor other music genres…but mostly folk…i usually play with the capo on 2nd and 3rd fret…i don’t know why
i’ve written enough songs to have an album out…i suppose one day maybe…or maybe not…

I play an acoustic guitar, which belongs to my dad, but I am planing to buy an electric guitar some time soon, it fits more to the type of music I tend to play.

i've played acoustic guitar for about 5 years on and off- it's only now i'm getting good enough to play anything like
i'm self taught, so this might be wrong, but i think it's easier to sing for some people if they have the capo on about 2nd fret, though i'm usually ok without one.
it's funny, cos i write poetry and compose folky tunes, but i've never written a proper song with words and everything.  i wouldn't know where to start!

I've played electric and acoustic. I mostly play electric, though. I have been playing for about 6 months now. I'm not really taking formal lessons or anything; my dad is teaching me what he knows.

Not very impressive, I know, but I'm told I'm making a lot of progress.

I've played guitar for about 50 years now...

My first guitar I bought in a pawn shop in Denver after working in the mountains for a summer. I didn't know what to look for so I got one with a warped neck and real high action on the strings. After 2 days and bleeding fingers on my chord hand I took it back and told them there was something wrong with it. They wouldn't take it back so I think I left it on the street. Next up, I guess a few years later was an old Stella with better action and I started to learn on that. Somewhere along the way I bought a Martin and headed to Texas with it. I had started listening to the blues and near Tallulah, Louisiana I asked a kid outside a grocery store if there were any blues players in the area. He told me about a blind man named Blind Son and I went directly to his house, knocked on the door, it was a shotgun shack and he said "whoozat"? I told him I'd heard he was pretty good on the guitar and wondered if I could hear him play. He said he didn't have a 'box' I said I did and he opened the door. First thing he said was "what choo drinkin?" This was my cue to go to the liquor for a pint. When I got back and he'd had a few snorts he took the Martin and tuned it to open and used an old Prince Albert can to play slide, the first time I'd seen this live. I ended up leaving the Martin with him and went on to Texas. Three months later I saw a guitar for 20 bucks or so hanging in a bar, bought it and made another trip back to Tallulah, on Christmas Day. When I gave him this guitar he was real disappointed, he'd got to liking that Martin. That Martin was eventually stolen by a junkie out of a squat in NYC. Through the years I've had mostly acoustics, favorites being that Martin, Gibson Gospel, which I still have, National Steel resophonic, Dobro, which I have now and assorted Electrics, a couple of Strats, Teles, Epiphone Elite. I just carry the Dobro with me now, as I'm traveling and play mostly slide, but the action is low enough to play regular tuning too. I've played clubs and bars, but mostly play for anybody who wants to listen. Last year in China I played with a drummer and bass player on a Chinese New Year's TV show. Everybody else was tumbling and dancing and groupchorale singing and high wire acts and we come on with the Texas Blues. We had a good time even though not many people knew what we were singing about. Sorry to take up so much space, I get a little carried away talking about guitars. Cheers, MJ

    Of course!

I've always been interested in guitar since I was 5 years old. At age 12 (I'm 13 now,) I started playing the electric bass and I was told by my music teacher I was a naturalist, so the school gave me a scholarship. Too bad I can't use it now!

Then I started playing acoustic guitar a few months later - then I got an Ibanez electric for Xmas and I started rocking out on that. (which I am right now...)

I'm more of a punk rock musician, but I play the odd jazz and classic sometimes.

Now I play the drums aswell, but guitar is my "major."

In my opinion, it's the best instrument ever! I hope I succeed in it one day.
