Breakfast Scene

The kitchen lino is cool against her burning cheek
Her breasts, full and heavy, are squashed against her ribs
One breast, leaking, a round stain soaking through her shirt
and the baby gurgles, sweet bananery whines in the stillness

He stands, he stands, his outstretched hand
still in position.

The lino chills her skin through her shirt
and is sticky from where she dropped the juice
The baby whines and the Calendar’s
not been changed from March to April.
The cat snoozes on in his basket
as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened.

But she will stare into the black and white lino
until her eyes water
Her hips hurt from where she fell across the table
but she will not move
until the door slams shut
and he is gone
She will clean it all up, finish feeding the baby
and not go out tomorrow.

Please tell me what you think

    Students aren't supposed to study

Wow Silver! Have you been at your books? This is excellent storytelling/poetry and you kept me intrigued and guessing right to the end where you surprised me and I thought 'Wow - Silver has really COME ON'. Your work with detail and the senses here (the cool lino, the leaking breast, the calendar unchanged, the sleeping cat(a bit unlikely - but let it pass) ) all work brilliantly in involving the reader and setting the scene. I really wondered had she died, become ill, had an injury - but didn't suspect the 3rd party till that door slammed shut - in the poem and in my head. This is one of your very best so far. Really , really good. xxx >W<

      Humble Thanks

I'm glad you liked this one, and no, what a foolish thought. Of course I don't study! I actually didn't like this one so much, I never thought my use of such concrete imagery suited me but I am glad you enjoyed it.
      I'm back!

      Your nonsensical nemesis!
