Cynicism Is My Religion

I’m about as bitter and sarcastic
As they come
I revel in laughing
At this cesspool of humanity
And the fools that run around saying
I just want to make the world
A better place
Or the virtual slaves of the status quo
Who smile happy face smiles
And say, have a nice day
To whoever comes along
And shits on them
Good little people
Who believe in
Keeping their sunny side up
Always seeing the glass
As half full
Brainwashing themselves
Into believing that
A good positive attitude
Will see them through
Smelling only roses
In a field of manure
And when all is said and done
Heaven awaits
Where they can
Drink pink lemonade
And lick giant lollipops
For the rest of eternity

But sometimes
In my moments of weakness
I wonder
Maybe their right

Then is I say nah…
And give myself
A good hard
Smack in the face

  • Fantastic insight into the world of a cynic, dave. And stinging poetry as usual from your stable. The question to be asked, cynics have their right to be cynical. But why all the hate for people who are not. Its a huge divide between the two kinds of human species. THe cynics and the non-cynics

      hey himanshumodi

thanks for commenting. i think the question is why do the non-cynics bother the cynics? i.e i can't count the times i was out in a cafe or somewhere and some guy will be staring at me and approach to join his church. and often the non-cynics are the ones who are very judgemental towards the cynic-which makes him that much more cynical.

    Dave,

coming to grips with reality is better than living in a glass castle. but i guess it could go the other way around too... reality is different for everyone i suppose. sorry you got stuck slapping yourself in the face.

    best of luck,

      hey pap

i think a poem isn't necessariy the gospel, but more like a facet of truth, there are other facets that are contrarian but don't nessarily disprove the poem. just a thought. thanks for commenting.

Here comes a kick in the ass

This was a funny poem and it is too true! I tend to be one of those happy slappy optomists who can't wake up to reality. I love the sarcasm and bitterness in this.
It reminds me of my true self. And I'm glad I'm not the only closet grump out there. Kudos, Dave!

  • hahaha

"Smelling only roses/In a field of manure" = epic

I (of course) love the topic and point of view. I'd rather be a realist than an ignorant optimist. But then again I also wanted to grow up to be a fire dog when I was little. Yes, an actual dog.

  • I like this poem a whole lot ... it reminds me of my cousin (and myself a little ... hah). I especially like the lines where you talk about the half full glasses and the brainwashing with a positive attitude. Can't help but wonder how many times I've pondered why people do that. Oh! And I like your very last stanza as well. :}

    Biff! Bang! Wallop!

Here, let me help you with that.(Biff!) Nothing I like more than a man with his feet on the ground, his eye on the ball and his hands behind his back!(Bang!) The world is full of pain and I can help you acclimatize!(Wallop!)
Love your particular brand of cynicism, Professor. >W<
