Happenstance Strangers

we are happenstance strangers
filling in our oversize shoes
with random conversations
that unravel the mysteries
of human trivialities.

sitting on concrete sidewalks
watching as those we know
stumble upon their made up lies
and wake up in a slumber we've
shaken off so long before

we grieve at the lost of decent
thought, of individuality
and we stick out of the crowd
as dorks in their high school 40s
laughing like lunatics

hiding our upturned noses
for humble pie and whispering
our wounded rants
across the book alleys
we called home.

we save each other
from ourselves and our anxieties
we whisk our wands of wonder
as we make up stories
and dream up realities
into our letters

we are happenstance strangers
two introverts
finding a trusting audience
in each other.
filling our oversize shoes
with our similar souls.

and maybe that's all there is:

two of us
tying knots across continents,
across time.
