White Soul

.

They called you 'Dusty'
after your voice no doubt
it was the sixties
and you could twist and shout
with the best of them

but you had more

a voice like silk
tearing
bearing the indelible stamp
of some perfect
imperfection
like it had been cracked
by the tears of the Muse

the voice of a woman
and a child
the restrained wild of it
delicately strong
the sexiest voice in the world

just doesn't say it

your voice was the song

they're wrong to say
that perfect soul is black

the greatest soul was
yours
and white
and cracked

Author notes

Dusty Springfield had the greatest white soul voice - arguably the greatest soul voice - of all time.

    hey john

i liked this, i remember dusty springfield when i was a kid, on of my favorite songs was Wishin and Hopin, i still remember the words and her voice.

as for the poem very well constructed with the juxtapositioned images i.e black/white, child/women, silk/tearing, i'd say this was light/dense.

Hey Windhover, I really liked this one alot, haven't really listented to much Dusty but I'm looking into some of her stuff on youtube to see what I like, then I'll download. I thought this was a wonderful read. I really liked the flow of it, took me 2 readings to get the flow right. I liked the slight internal rhyming of course, using it to your advantage instead of a crutch, but I don't need to tell you that you're a seasoned vet at this stuff LoL. Like always this was a great read and there's nothing negative I can say about it...at all. LoL in fact the only thing I can see where you could be frustrated is when I say that I'm not really a big fan of the older soul music, but damn does she have an amazing voice. A Great tribute. Congrats.

      All about the voice

Hey Marcus, thanks for this very flattering and positive comment. It's great that you heard her voice, because with Dusty it's all about the voice more than the song. Thanks much, Marcus. >W<
