Conversation with God (alias Frank)

Missing image

"So - what should I call you?"

"Let's keep it informal. I'm going to try to be frank with you. So why not call me Frank."

"Okay -- Frank. So - how come your creation's such a mess?"

"My creation? You mean the Universe? Or did you have something more parochial in mind?"

"I suppose I meant the world. This world mankind lives in. It's pretty screwed up in case you haven't noticed."

"Well, that's really not my fault. If you did like I asked you to do, things wouldn't be in such bad shape."

"Okay, okay I know, not everybody follows your commandments an' whatever but look, Frank, you can't just hand down some ancient laws an' expect sophisticated beings like humans to just obey them, for Chrissake...oh, sorry...I..."

"Forget about it. Go on."

"Well it's like I was saying, you must have known we'd outgrow that stuff. You're supposed to be omniscient after all. Omniscient and omnipotent. If you're so damn smart and powerful, why the hell didn't you just make us so we'd do the right thing all the time? It's like you deliberately sabotaged the whole thing, like you put a virus in your own computer program."

"I wanted to make you just like me -- in my own image as they say."

"Well hey, I can understand why you might want to do that but couldn't you have done a better job?"

"I thought I'd done pretty good."

"But we're screw-ups. We screw everything up, Frank! Why couldn't you make us so we'd just do what you said and get the masterplan done right?"

"I wanted you to have free will."

"Free will? Why! Why for...for Pete's sake! Isn't it obvious that that's the fucking problem here. What's the big fucking deal with free will, Frank?"

"I didn't want you to just obey me. Just doing what I told you wouldn't have meant anything."

"Why not? Not obeying you has been the source of all the problems, right? That's the goddamn virus, isn't it? How difficult could it have been to organize it. What the hell did you expect to happen, Frank?"

"I guess I expected you to love me. Pretty dumb, huh?"

    Hey Windhover,
I like how the concept of freewill and god's love is presented in such a casual conversation. I grew up hearing the "doctrine/teachings" on freewill and i think that's what makes it all poetic, he flawed us for love. And i guess, looking at it in this perspective, we, as humans, wouldn't want to dictate and tell someone "love me." The beauty of it all, its a conscious decision...an act of free will. Interesting read W, made me think. Still is...

    hey john

well written, i'd mulled this over so many times it was like listen to myself think however you took it a step further with the last line.

one slight thing that would make this even clearer i think the narrator should be Frank who speaks to god.

      No Contest

Hi R. Thanks for the kind words here and I'm glad you liked it. I have to defend myself on the 'beating God' accusation. I hoped to suggest surprise (not triumph) in the protagonist (and the reader) with the idea that God Himself might have vulnerabilities and doubts. I wanted to suggest that the reason he'd HAVE to give us free will is that if he wanted our love, it would be meaningless if he gave us no choice in the matter, just as such love would be meaningless, not love at all, to us, whom He made, according to Himself, in His own image.
Again, thanks for the thoughtful and generous critique. >W<

      Great Minds Seldom Differ

Hey Professor. Glad your thoughts echo my own a little here. Is this a case of 'great minds think alike' or 'fools seldom differ' I wonder! I reckon the former of course.
As for the 'Frank' thing, I definitely want to call GOD Frank to make him more approachable and human. I wonder did that get confused/confusing? Anyway, thanks for stopping by as always. >W<

hey Wind, nice job, very well written,i really like the virus-sins idea,i`m not convinced about the ending,it implies that you have beaten God in a conversation, surely(IMHO) God would have every answer to every question

I enjoyed reading this, the manner in which you write, regardless of the topic,is really appealing to me,you never show off in your work even though i know you could

    cheers

    WOW

Ok well I didnt like how you chose to cuss at god, but it seems you were just making a point. If you were just representing the many people that asks those questions and are stubborn minded than i understand. I just didnt like those parts. But overall that ending line made my heart stop....its so true and all god asks us to do is love him! Its the number one law to do and he showed us what love was when he died for us. But what common people misunderstand is that god is expecting us to love him in return! Why is it so hard for people to do when he made the ultimate sacrafice! Otherthan the cussing i love this peice. This will open alot of peoples eyes.

      No Offense meant.

Hi Chosen and thanks for this kind comment. I'm glad it 'made your heart stop', that's a tremendous compliment and alongside the humour ( I hope ) there IS a serious message here.
As for the cussing, it's gratuitous mainly and offered in the name of humour but with no disrespect to the Man I believe you would call Our Lord. Personally I don't believe the Good Lord is so intolerant that he'd mind, and if 'taking His name in vain' is as bad a thing as too many people think it is then most of the world is damned here and now. I believe the 'taking in vain' idea has more to do with ridiculing BELIEF, attempting to undermine the very IDEA of God, which nothing I write would EVER try to do. Hope I'm right about that or else I'm screwed.
Thanks again for this great comment. >W<

        Absolutley.

Lol I know exzacly what you mean. And I don't think God would mind it just as long as it's being used for his glory. People need to see the reality of the things they do, and find the greater purpose of it all. May God bless you and continue to use you in your work ! PEACE, HOPE, AND BLESSING!
